Four seasons, very different regions
- Spring (March–May): mild in the east, blossoms, but rain in the south.
- Summer (June–August): hot and humid in the east/south; cool in the north-west; peak domestic travel.
- Autumn (September–November): generally the best all-round season; clear, mild, busy in October.
- Winter (December–February): cold and dry in the north; mild in the south; Spring Festival travel rush.
Holidays to avoid
Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) and the October National Day Golden Week are the two biggest domestic travel peaks. Tickets, hotels and attractions are crowded and expensive. If you want the festival atmosphere, book months ahead and expect crowds; if you want efficiency, travel outside those weeks.
Regional differences
A single “best time” does not work for all of China. Beijing is best in autumn; Shanghai in spring/autumn; Yunnan is comfortable year-round but rainy in summer; Harbin is a winter destination; Guangzhou is hot and humid in summer. Match the season to the region, not the country.
Reality check
There is no single best season for a country this size; the best month for Beijing can be the worst for Guangzhou.
Local tip: Check the local holiday calendar before locking dates.
Step by step
- Choose your region first, then check its climate.
- Avoid the first week of October and Spring Festival unless you plan for crowds.
- Book long-distance transport as soon as dates are fixed.
- Check local holidays and school breaks.
- Pack for temperature swings and rain.
- Keep one flexible day for weather delays.
Typical costs
| Item | Cost / note |

Common mistakes
- Visiting Beijing in January without warm clothes.
- Travelling during Golden Week without reservations.
- Assuming southern China is always warm in winter.
- Planning outdoor hikes in the rainy season without backup.
If things go wrong
- If you hit a holiday crowd, shift to museums and neighbourhoods instead of headline sights.
- If weather ruins a day, keep one flexible day in the itinerary.
FAQ
What is the best month overall?
September–November is generally the most comfortable across much of eastern and central China, but it is also busy.
Is summer unbearable?
In Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing it can be very hot and humid. The north-west and higher altitudes are cooler.
Should I avoid Chinese New Year?
Only if you dislike crowds and closed businesses. If you want the festival, plan and book early.
First 72 hours: the field guide
The first three days are mostly logistics: documents, a working phone, a bed and a registered address. Get those right and the rest of the trip becomes much easier.
Before you land
Keep one offline folder with your passport photo page, visa, insurance, first hotel address in Chinese and onward ticket. Put the hotel address on your lock screen or a paper card. If you take prescription medicine, keep it in hand luggage with the prescription; checked bags get delayed.
At the airport
Complete the arrival card before the queue. Use the foreign-passport lane unless a staff member directs you elsewhere. After baggage, choose the red customs channel if you have anything to declare: food, plants, large cash, restricted medicine or commercial samples. The green channel is only for nothing-to-declare.
The first evening
Buy or activate a data plan, test a small mobile payment, and confirm that the hotel has registered your passport. If you are staying privately, ask the host about police-station registration before you unpack. Save the local emergency numbers and your embassy contact.
Quick checks
- Passport, visa and hotel address offline
- Working data plan and one payment app
- Registration confirmed at hotel or police station
- Cash backup and a second card
- Embassy and 120/110 numbers saved
